US Mechanized Infantry Company 1976

In this project I built a US mechanized infantry company circa 1976 as it would have appeared in Germany. The vehicles are painted in the winter verdant MERDC pattern which the vehicles wore year round. I used the officially prescribed patterns, which is how I recall the 1-39 Infantry's (my old unit) vehicles were painted. The vehicle "canvas" covers were not painted, even though the official patterns show patterns for the covers. I include the M578 recovery vehicle as part of the company TOE here, but they were actually consolidated at battalion level. I only saw these vehicles in the motor pool, never in the field.

All are GHQ 1:285 scale models.

The whole company. From left to right: company HQ and maintenance sections; three rifle platoons (4 tracks each); and the weapons platoon with three 81mm mortars and two TOW tracks.

The M578 recovery vehicle.

Gamma Goat

M35 2 1/2 ton trucks. It wouldn't be the Army without these trucks.

MUTTs

M113A1. These served as command, troop carrier, maintenance and fire direction control vehicles in the company.

M125A1 mortar tracks. These carried an 81mm mortar.

TOW tracks. This was the heavy anti-tank asset of the company. At this time the TOW gunner had no overhead protection when he operated the TOW.

A full rifle platoon.

The full weapons platoon.

The Headquarters section.

The Maintenance section.
